i haven’t had time (and honestly, the mental and emotional spoons) to address all the notes in my list post, but i want two things to be known about it:
1. it was at first a list for me specifically, to put all of the concerns i have about the united states in one place so i can retain the information i want to impart on my reps when i call them. it’s non-exhaustive because i am a cis queer mentally ill black woman, and i have blind spots, and i’m not interested in advocating for just myself and my people. a rising tide lifts all boats and i want to help lift all of the boats.
2. this is about things that our soon to be centrist Democratic government would not think about and do not want to do. they’re going to rejoin the Paris Agreement, 46 already tweeted about that. but they’ve taken a shit stance on abolishing ICE and the American prison industrial complex. so that’s why one of those is on my list, and one isn’t.
3. i shared my list to encourage people to make their own. so while i do appreciate (and absolutely WANT) people to tell me where my blind spots are, don’t use my list to tell me what you want me to do. use my list to start your own list! i want us, as a collective, to keep the political pressure up, and that means all of us getting on the same page.
if 70+ million Americans all call their reps and say “why the fuck are we still colonizing places? and why are we having conversations about their land and their economies without them leading it? and WHY THE FUCK are we talking about turning them into states as if that’s gong to fix everything?” then hey. our reps are going to have to address this problem and finally, hopefully, Puerto Ricans and other colonized people WILL BE ABLE TO LEAD THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS.
rinse and repeat! that’s what i want! tell me my blind spots, tell me where to look so i won’t make our lives harder by calling my reps and saying the right things.
EDIT: also let me be perfectly clear. me saying “granting” colonies statehood as if that’s not just more American imperialism was trash and irresponsible and was definitely a mistake i should not have made. so when it comes to that, when it comes to disability rights, when it comes to stuff i fuck up, tell me that! i will absolutely be doing more reading and research from this point on though. but when i say something dumb, call my ass out!
